Port of Hamburg welcomes line upgrade in the port’s hinterland

The Authority for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation (BWVI) of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) welcome the upgrade of the rail line between Stendal and Uelzen. At the turn of the year, Deutsche Bahn and the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs signed the relevant agreement. The two parties intend to invest a total of around 57 million euros in the rail line. Upgrading the route to a double track line sets an important signal for the Port of Hamburg.

Brunsbüttel Ports closes 2011 with a record transhipment volume of over 10 million tons for the first time and plans further expansion.

Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH, a company of the SCHRAMM group, also continued its successful development in 2011. Thanks to its broad positioning as a universal port group with its mainstays of general cargo, bulk and liquid cargo in the three ports in Brunsbüttel, it was possible to boost the transhipment volume to over 10 million tons for the first time. The transhipment of liquid goods in the NOK ports of Ostermoor and Ölhafen (oil port) increased substantially compared with the previous years.

Lars Anke, Port of Hamburg Marketing Representative from Shanghai, be-lieves that the adjustment of import and export flows in maritime trade will continue in 2012 owing to exchange-rate developments and restructuring processes within the Chinese industry. This will also have an influence on the composition of merchandise flows.

Mega ships coming to Hamburg in ever growing numbers: 14,000-TEU mega-containership “CSCL Mars” in Port of Hamburg on maiden voyage

Year by year, the number of exceptionally large ships (known as AGFs in German) calling in the Port of Hamburg is growing and with it, the size of such ships. With the call by the “CSCL Mars”, visiting Hamburg this week for the first time on her maiden voyage, the Hanseatic City welcomed one of the very largest containerships currently serving the Port of Hamburg. With a capacity of 14,074 TEU (20-ft standard containers) and operated by China Shipping Container Lines, this vessel is one of the AGF class of exceptionally large containerships and bulkers.

New liner services reinforce container traffic between Hamburg and Russia

Starting in November 2011, two new feeder line services will be scheduled for regular sailings between the Port of Hamburg and Russia. The shipping company Team Lines will be using the RUS 2 Service in the Hamburg – St. Petersburg – Hamburg – Bremerhaven – Hamburg rotation to augment its RUS 1 service handled by its own vessels with capacities of OOCL for containerised shipping to this key market region. Poland moves closer to the German sea ports

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and the rail operator Polzug Intermodal have opened a hub terminal near the Polish city of Poznán. The cuttingedge site – the first of its kind in Poland – now allows daily shuttle trains to be run between the North European sea ports and Poznán. This reduces transport times between Hamburg and Poznán alone by about a third.

Containership newbuilding UMM SALAL makes first call in Port of Hamburg

On 7 June 2011 the UMM SALAL, the biggest containership to date belonging to United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), tied up in the Port of Hamburg on her maiden voyage. The giant container ship, with a capacity of 13,100 TEU (20 foot standard containers) was handled at Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH).

The UMM SALAL is 365.5 metres long, 48.40 metres wide and is equipped with over 1,000 reefer slots, making it the first of nine ships of this size to be completed in 2011 and 2012.

Grand Alliance – inaugural arrival from Vietnam - “NYK Lodestar” links Ho-Chi-Minh City and Hamburg

On Wednesday, 27 April 2011 at 18:00 hours, the “NYK Lodestar” docked at the HHLA Container-Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). Her cargo included containers shipped directly from Vietnam, to be unloaded in Hamburg. The “NYK Lodestar” was the first vessel of the Grand Alliance consortium of shipping companies to call at the Vietnamese deep-water port of Cai Mep, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Ho-Chi-Minh City, as part of their Asia-Europe service.
