As the local arm of Port of Hamburg Marketing, we build networks, organize events and supply information on the latest developments in Germany’s largest universal port. Excellent transport links by truck, barge and rail between Hamburg and the hinterland play a crucial role. Switzerland’s industry is export-orientated. In 2010 Swiss imports/exports totalled around 470,000 TEU (20-ft-standard-container) in volume. On an international comparison, Germany is by a wide margin Switzerland’s top trading partner ahead of Italy, France and the USA.

With an income per capita of around 45,450 euros (March 2011), Switzerland is amongst the world’s most prosperous countries. The Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) has once again placed Switzerland top among all the countries in its annual Global Competitiveness Index.

Hamburg is an essential transhipment hub for Switzerland. Rail infrastructure and container train links between the hanseatic city and the Alpine state are constantly being expanded. Hamburg takes first place with over 45 percent of Switzerland‘s transportation of cargo by train. Hamburg, Europe‘s largest railway port, offers Swiss customers high departure frequency and a wide choice of rail operators.

Hot off the press: the new Port of Hamburg Handbook 2012

In the newly published 2012 edition of the Port of Hamburg Handbook, Port of Ham-burg Marketing again presents an overview of the port’s capabilities on a total of 136 pages. The current edition, published in both German and English, provides business partners and friends of the Port of Hamburg with interesting and useful information about the wide range of efficient services offered by what are mainly SMEs operating in Hamburg’s seaport-related industries and in the partner ports within the region.

Der Hamburger Hafen erreicht in den ersten drei Monaten 2012 einen Gesamtumschlag von 32,6 Millionen Tonnen (+ 3,8 Prozent). Der im Universalhafen Hamburg dominierende Containerumschlag kommt mit einem Umschlagergebnis von 2,2 Millionen TEU (20-Fuß-Standardcontainer) auf ein Plus von 5,2 Prozent im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal 2011.

Award for HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder

The HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) has been awarded the international certificate “Container Terminal Quality Indicator” (CTQI), proving that the facility is one of the most efficient terminals in the world. At the same time, the CTA reached record levels in hinterland rail handling.

Cargo handling figures 3/2011

At 99 million tons, in the first nine months of the year throughput in the Port of Hamburg advanced by around 11 percent. This excellent, above-average result on throughput enabled the Port of Hamburg to recover market share in competition with the major ports in Northern Europe.

Totalling 6.8 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), throughput in Hamburg grew at a double-digit (15.3 percent) rate and hence distinctly faster than in the West ports of Antwerp (up 3.1 percent) and Rotterdam (up 7.7 percent).
