Hot off the press: the new Port of Hamburg Handbook 2012

In the newly published 2012 edition of the Port of Hamburg Handbook, Port of Ham-burg Marketing again presents an overview of the port’s capabilities on a total of 136 pages. The current edition, published in both German and English, provides business partners and friends of the Port of Hamburg with interesting and useful information about the wide range of efficient services offered by what are mainly SMEs operating in Hamburg’s seaport-related industries and in the partner ports within the region.

Der Hamburger Hafen erreicht in den ersten drei Monaten 2012 einen Gesamtumschlag von 32,6 Millionen Tonnen (+ 3,8 Prozent). Der im Universalhafen Hamburg dominierende Containerumschlag kommt mit einem Umschlagergebnis von 2,2 Millionen TEU (20-Fuß-Standardcontainer) auf ein Plus von 5,2 Prozent im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal 2011.

Berlin-Brandenburg’s traffic links with the Port of Hamburg

The excellent transport links by truck, barge and rail between Hamburg and the hinterland play a crucial role. The road, inland waterway and rail network is therefore continually being upgraded and modernized to meet all essential requirements. Smooth and rapid transport of all goods with maximum environmental compatibility is of special importance for achieving commercial success.

The Port of Hamburg’s significance for Berlin-Brandenburg’s foreign trade

Berlin’s exports accounted for 13 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2010, with a volume of 12.3 billion euros. In the same year goods to a value of 9.7 billion euros were imported.

The main goods exported consist of pharmaceutical products, vehicles and automotive parts, equipment for generating and distributing electricity, as well as tobacco products.

The leading foreign trade partners for seaborne exports are the USA, Japan and China, and for seaborne imports, the USA, China and Canada.

Significant factors for Berlin-Brandenburg's economy

Berlin as the Federal capital is not only at the centre of Germany’s political life, but also a region with an interesting economy.

Berlin’s economy is notable for a mix of long-established industrial companies, strong small and medium-sized enterprises and innovative high-tech industry. The leading branches of industry are chemicals and pharmaceuticals, foods, tobacco, metal working, electrical and general engineering, as well as transport technology.

Eastern Germany is of great significance for the Port of Hamburg in terms of imports and exports in foreign trade. Especially since reunification, the Hanseatic port has profited from the extremely well developed transport infrastructure and the growing export trade in the new states of the Federal Republic. Hamburg is among the leading overseas ports for Berlin-Brandenburg.
